(Free) Ecuadorian Healthcare

My roommate Diego from Colombia was feeling sick and decided to go check into the hospitals here in Ecuador. He waited 40 minutes in a comfy chair with a TV on the wall and after that all the services he received were quick (for example 10 minutes wait time for his blood results). He got his blood drawn, chest x-rayed, 6 different medicines, and care from multiple nurses and doctors (who according to them are well paid, and continue to get salary increases). “They treated me like just a human being,” he later commented. If he waited a couple more days he would have gotten pneumonia. They didn’t ask him for his passport or any personal information, only took his name when they gave him meds to keep track of where they were going. He was invited to stay the night, but his symptoms weren’t severe enough to require that. He is going back tomorrow to see a specialist for pneumonia.

Diego didn’t pay a dime for anything.
